The best old ThinkPads to buy in 2026, from a ThinkPad guy
ThinkPads are the reason I'm a Lenovo guy. I'm writing this on a T15, and before that I carried a T440 for years. These are the used models I'd spend money on in 2026, plus a few that make better projects than daily laptops.
My picks
- Best all-around: ThinkPad T480. It runs Windows 11 officially, is easy to upgrade, and has the swappable battery.
- Newer and thinner: T14 Gen 1, especially the AMD version, or the T490. Buy with 16 GB, since some memory is soldered on.
- Cheap Linux machine: T440p, T450, or T460.
- For the keyboard nerds: X220 or T420, the last with the classic 7-row keyboard. They're great for Linux, but they won't run Windows 11.
Why buy an old ThinkPad at all?
ThinkPads were built for business customers who ran them hard for years, and it shows. The keyboards are widely considered the best in the business, the cases take a beating, and they're designed to be opened up and repaired. Lenovo publishes a free hardware maintenance manual for every model, with every screw and part number.
Because companies buy them by the thousand and retire them on a schedule, there's a steady supply of used ones and spare parts for years afterward. A replacement keyboard, battery, or cable for a common model is easy to find and usually cheap.
The catch is that "old ThinkPad" covers more than a decade of laptops, and they're not all equal. Here's how I'd sort them.

Which old ThinkPads run Windows 11?
The line is the processor. Intel 8th generation or newer (or AMD Ryzen 2000 or newer) runs Windows 11 officially. For ThinkPads, that means the T480, T580, X280, and everything after, including the T490, T14, and my T15.
The T470 and older don't qualify, even though many of them are perfectly capable. You can force Windows 11 onto them, but Microsoft doesn't promise those PCs will keep getting updates. For a laptop that needs to run Windows long-term, buy a T480 or newer. For an older one, plan on Linux, or on Windows 10 with free security updates until October 2027.
Best old ThinkPads for Linux
ThinkPads have a long reputation as some of the best-supported Linux laptops, because so many developers use them. Almost any model will install Linux Mint or Ubuntu and usually just work, Wi‑Fi and sleep included.
- Cheapest good option: a T440p, T450, or T460 with an SSD and 8 to 16 GB of memory. Plenty for web, email, and writing.
- Best overall for Linux: the T480. It has enough power for years, and it's easy to upgrade.
- For the fun of it: an X220 or T420 with the classic keyboard. They're slow by modern standards, but a joy to type on.

How ThinkPad model names work
- T series is the mainstream 14-inch workhorse. Most of the models here are T series.
- X series is the small, light 12 to 13-inch line. (The X1 Carbon is the premium thin one.)
- A "p" suffix (T440p) means a thicker, more powerful version. An "s" suffix (T440s) means a slimmer one.
- Before 2020 the number tells you the year: T420 is 2011, T430 is 2012, and so on up to the T490 in 2019.
- From 2020 on it's size plus generation: T14 Gen 1, T15 Gen 2, and so on.
- ThinkBook is a different, cheaper Lenovo line. They're decent laptops, and I have a few, but they're not ThinkPads.
What to check before you buy
- The exact processor. If Windows 11 matters, make sure it's 8th-gen Intel or newer. Listings often just say "Core i5."
- The screen. Many older ThinkPads shipped with a dim 1366×768 panel. Look for "FHD" or "1920×1080 IPS."
- Soldered memory. On the T490, T14, and X280, you can't add much later, so buy with 16 GB.
- The battery. Run
powercfg /batteryreportwhen it arrives. Batteries are cheap to replace on most T models, but it's good to know. - A BIOS password. Ex-corporate ThinkPads sometimes still have one set. If it asks for a password nobody gave you, send it back.
